rice-a-roni

Last month, we bought a lot of rice. A lot of rice. 25 lbs of jasmine and 15 lbs of basmati.

Why? Because we love rice. We eat it several times a week. It’s a yummy (& cheap!) side to an endless list of meals. And it never goes bad.

Rice isn’t all that expensive when you buy it in a 1 lb. bag. It gets even cheaper when you buy in serious bulk.

Buying in bulk is a great idea - if and only if you will actually use the bulk of it.

For instance, a membership to Costco or Sam’s Club isn’t worthwhile for us. The cost of the membership & the gas to drive there just simply wouldn’t outweigh the benefits for us. But a ton of rice - yep, that’s something we’re willing to stock & stash.

Takeaway: Buy in bulk - if you can justify it.

Total Yearly Savings: It save us about $15 a month to buy in bulk. Not too shabby.

I really appreciate what you have written here. Sometimes, it is wise to buy in bulk; sometimes it is not. I think that we can go broke saving money, if we buy in bulk stuff we will never use or will go bad before we use it. BUT if we will use it, and it will not go bad before we do, buying in bulk can be an excellent way to save money.

I laugh every time I see people in the parking lot of our local Sam’s club. There must surely be a fear in America of running out of toilet paper and paper towels some day.
