Ladies, this post is for you. (Guys, feel free to read on, but in my experience it’s not the guys who struggle with going to GreatClips to get a cut for $10.)
The average salon will cost you around $165 all told:
$60 hair cut
$85 highlights
$20 tip
I find it pretty amazing that women will spend a total of $165 every four weeks for hair that is JUST GOING TO KEEP GROWING. Yes, that’s right – here’s the revelation: that hair just going to come back. And you will be right back where you started (minus the $165 of course).
Moving from one big city to another, I was surprised how hard it was to find a cheap, yet stylish, great hair cut & color. I called one salon after another, and it seemed the price kept climbing.
“Hi, how much for a women’s hair cut?”
“85 dollars.”
“No, I mean from a junior stylist.”
“Yes, that will be $85 & up. If you’re interested in our master stylist . . .
WHAT??!!!
So then I remembered something I heard about when I lived in the Big Apple: beauty schools. I’m not talking about the shady, dirty, sure we’ll cut your hair for a buck place, I’m talking about training grounds for the up & coming $85 stylists. Paul Mitchell & Aveda both offer great, reputable options (Bonus: At Paul Mitchell, you can request a “Phase II” student. Read: less likely to have you leave crying). Sure, it may take a few trips before you find the perfect stylist, but you can expect that anywhere. The biggest reward: the extra $100 you’ll keep. On my last visit to Paul Mitchell Atlanta, I walked out the door with a great cut & sunny highlights for a grand total of $65 (from an advanced student nonetheless), tip included. Now that’s living large on less.
Takeaway: It’s possible to find a bargain salon style. It will just require a bit of energy & creativity from you. And yes, a bit of courage.
Total Yearly Savings: You’re looking at saving at least $1,200.
