At most places of employment, there’s a standard “benefits package.” Your HR rep will walk you through the perks of working at ABC Consulting. Medical, dental, vision . . . you know the drill so well you probably aren’t even paying attention half the time.
But have you thought about what other perks might be available to you, just because you work at ABC?
For instance, I save about $20 a month on my phone bill, because Verizon gives me a “special employment discount” - and all I had to do was show them a pay stub. Now that’s easy money.
But I know that there are a variety of other retailers who will offer you discounts based on where you work - including (but certainly not limited to): restaurants, salons, movie theatres, and apartment communities. Now certainly these discounts will vary based on the size and status of your institution. But in our weak economy, retailers are anxious to claim your business, so it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask. You just never know what free and easy discounts you may get . . .
Takeaway: It never hurts to ask if you’re eligible for a discount, based on your place of employment, your age, your former student ID that you just keep forgetting to throw away . . .
Total Yearly Savings: For me, it adds up to over $300 a year. Yummy.
